Unidentified photographer, possibly Carlo Ponti (Italy): Palazzo Gussoni, Venice, with Gondola. Albumen print, 7-3/4" x 10", circa 1875
This image was selected not just for the elegant construction of the palazzo, in a style known as Lombardesque, but also for the irresistible detail of the gondola and its two occupants. The figures seem oblivious to the ancient carvings on the building we're examining --giving this photograph the sense of a stolen glance.
